Why did I want to become a dentist? It goes way back to my childhood actually. I got braces when I was 13 years old, awkward teenager, and I remember I had to get them on for four years and so it’s plenty of time to get to know the dentist. The team really enjoyed going to the dentist.
I was one of those kids that liked going to the dentist and actually developed a pretty good relationship with the dentist. He invited me to come in about 30 minutes early, you know, as we got to know each other. I shadowed him about once a month and I decided at 14 that I wanted to be a dentist and that of course faded a little bit here up and down throughout adolescence and also the trip to Honduras.
I did a dental service mission for two weeks and that sealed the deal for me, to be able to see some of these people that had never seen a dentist and they were older adults, kids that were just so excited to see a health care provider, just to see the joy in their faces and it was so rewarding to see that side of dentistry and I knew right away that I wanted to be a dentist.
